On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the Boys and Girls Club of Camarillo held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate a new beginning. The ceremony commemorated their new STEAM-dedicated wing, and renovations to portions of the existing facility including the entry façade, kitchen, and restrooms. The momentous occasion and expansion of their facility marks the continued education and development of future leaders of the community.
The new addition, to be known as the Bill and Joanne Miller Wing, will have a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM), and allow youths to explore practical applications of a curriculum that encourages critical thinking utilizing multiple disciplines. Supporting this blended approach, the addition will feature a teen center CLUB–a safe place specifically for youths age 13-18 to gather after school and do anything from sports to arts to volunteering to extended academic pursuits. It also includes a fabrication/model lab that supports hands-on research and learning, a multi-purpose classroom, a demonstration and presentation area, and a snack room supporting nutritional studies. These spaces are in addition to the existing facility that contains an art room, state-of-art computer/design lab, middle-school room, game area, gymnasium, auditorium and stage, multi-purpose rooms, administrative offices, and soon to be renovated kitchen.
Camarillo County Supervisor Kelly Long congratulated Boys and Girls Club of Camarillo CEO Roberto Martinez for the “amazing programs and opportunities” his team has created. She goes on to say “the 6,500 square foot middle school and teen services [addition] will better serve kids with special needs” with its new sensory room and other thoughtful amenities. “Throughout the years, the Camarillo Boys and Girls Club has touched thousands of lives and had broader societal effects,” Long continues.
The ceremony included remarks from Board Chairman Jerry Clifford, who shared that the Boys & Girls Club helps their members focus on the “Four C’s”—Confidence, Competence, Character, and Connection while building their paths for future success. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the entire team donned hard hats and wielded bright white shovels as they made the first digs into what will be the foundation of the new wing.
The Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo’s goal “is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” With this expanded facility, the local community’s youth will only benefit from the furthering of the club’s mission.
Staples Construction is partnered with Coastal Architects and S L Leonard & Associates. The project is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2022.
