History of Staples Construction

Like many California startups, Staples Construction began in the Founder’s garage.

In 1985, David Staples graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Construction Management. Soon the opportunity came to move west and he went to work for an established general contractor in Ventura, California. For the next ten years, David learned the tools of his trade, working on a multitude of commercial, industrial and retail construction projects. Grateful for the experience he’d gained and the opportunities given, David started to think about creating something of his own.

In 1995, with the help of his wife Tonya, David started Staples Construction, initially working out of their family’s garage. Believing that pre-construction services held the key to their success, he decided to turn this underutilized planning phase into a competitive advantage. By investing more time in planning and estimating, David was able to mitigate typical construction overruns and delays, while providing the information he needed to value engineer his projects.

In the early years, his business doubled every year. After that, annual revenue averaged $38 million and continues to trend northward. Even during the recession, when other companies couldn’t stay afloat, Staples was able to forge ahead. A commitment to diversification in all its forms helped it survive.

While more than a startup now, everyone on the Staples Construction team believes that the company’s reputation is on the line with every job. That startup mentality has ensured great project communication and quality product delivery for over twenty years.

To date, Staples Construction has developed projects totaling over $600 million in California and across the United States. Projects range in diversity from commercial, industrial, transportation, public works, and educational institutions to retail, mixed use, and hotels/resorts.

Engineering News Record (ENR) has named Staples Construction to its Top 100 California Contractors list. One reason is the company’s commitment to value engineering. With extensive pre-construction expertise, 3D constructability modelling, and detailed estimates at the earliest stage of a project, the Staples team helps every client make wise decisions at the outset. With workable plans in hand and great construction management throughout, Staples can all but guarantee successful project outcomes.
